A report commissioned by Muswellbrook Shire Council recognising the importance of preparing for economic diversification in response to restructuring in coal and power generation, received the prestigious President’s Award at the 2020 Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) New South Wales Awards for Planning Excellence.
In her presentation at the virtual awards ceremony last month PIA NSW president, Juliet Grant said the award was given for the report titled: Identifying measures of success for a global best-practice thermal coal mine and thermal coal-fired power station closure – Overview Report.
She noted that by acting on the recommendations in the report Muswellbrook Shire Council will ensure the Upper Hunter region is positioned to undertakes a successful regional economic transition.
General Manager, Fiona Plesman said Council was honoured to win the President’s Award. “The PIA congratulated Council for its recognition of the importance of early planning and investment in preparing for successful economic transition and for engaging experts, in this case a team from University of South Australia Business, to assist with the process.”
PIA is the national body representing planning and the planning profession and the annual awards recognise and acknowledge quality, innovation and excellence in planning. The PIA NSW Awards for Planning Excellence are a stepping-stone to PIA’s
National Awards.
