Georges River Council, New South Wales, has reinstated a creek in a large suburban park to improve water quality, stormwater harvesting and irrigation.
Completed in November 2020, Stage 2 of Council’s innovative Water Quality Improvement and Stormwater Harvesting Project at Gannons Park, Peakhurst has focused on the reinstatement of a section of Upper Boggywell Creek, improving water quality, biodiversity and the community’s capacity to access a more diverse open space.
Upper Boggywell Creek, which originally flowed through the park prior to the installation of a large stormwater culvert, has been partially reinstated in Lower Gannons Park. Stormwater is now diverted from an underground pipe to the reinstated creek and flows through newly installed wetlands, swales and bioretention systems where it is treated to remove pollutants.
The water is then stored in ponds for future reuse onsite and for irrigating the eight playing fields at Upper Gannons Park.
This project forms part of the Gannons Park Masterplan which has obtained Commonwealth, NSW Government and Georges River Council funding.
The project has delivered a significant upgrade of the public open space, giving Gannons Park a new identity and providing the local community with a beautiful place to exercise, relax and connect with nature.
