Increasing e-waste recycling

City of Rockingham has received $80,000 from the Western Australian Government’s WasteSorted e-waste 2020-2021 grants, to help increase the amount and range of e-waste collected for recycling.

The funding, provided by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, will enable Council to conduct an e-waste Recycling and Reuse Program at the Millar Road Landfill Facility (MRLF).

Commencing in March 2021, community members are now able to deposit e-waste at the MRLF free of charge.

Good quality items will be tested and tagged for resale at the Reuse shop.

Damaged items, and items not suitable for resale, will be recycled in Western Australia by secure and certified e-waste recyclers.

Recycling e-waste will ensure precious metals and finite resources are cycled back into the production line, significantly increasing their lifespan.

Recycling e-waste also prevents environmental damage as many of the metals within the waste can leach into groundwater and soil.

Landfilling e-waste is a frequent cause of tip fires due to the compaction of inbuilt batteries in common devices, causing safety concerns for waste services staff and the community.

City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels, said, “The City is very grateful to the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation for this funding.

“The implementation of the City’s e-waste Recycling and Reuse Program is a great step on our ongoing journey towards the realisation of our community’s vision to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce the generation of waste.”
