Public Art Selected

City of Darwin has selected a concept design for the Bicentennial Park Public Art Project which brings together two cultural stories deeply connected to the site chosen for the installation.

Local Larrakia artists, Roque Lee and Trent Lee developed the concept design ‘mirragma gunugurra-wa (bamboo raft)’ in collaboration with public art consultants Garuwa Creative due to its significance for Larrakia people.

Lord Mayor, Kon Vastalis said, “Public art enhances our natural and built environments, it builds upon our cultural heritage, diversity, sense of identity and provides opportunities for the artist to contribute to the development of the city’s creativity and vibrancy. It also builds a greater sense of community ownership, connectedness and belonging.

“I am very excited by the chosen design and I look forward to the reaction from the public once the artwork is installed later this year.”

The artists designed the concept after two weeks of intensive professional development with Garuwa Creative and renowned Melbourne multi-disciplinary artist, Patricia Piccinini. The proposed materials for building the artwork include case moulded concrete, and sand cast aluminium, selected based on strength, durability and safety. Final detailed design will now be completed with the artwork being installed at the Daly Street end of Bicentennial Park by mid-2022.
