Town of Gawler takes out Urban Development Award

For some time, it had been recognised by South Australia’s Town of Gawler that it needed to expand the range of services and facilities in its central business area. Competition from its adjoining neighbours Elizabeth, and more recently Munno Para and Barossa Valley, required an action plan.

Redevelopment of the Town Centre led the Shire to receive the 2002 Award for Excellence in Urban Development in South Australia.

Council invested considerable financial resources to develop its Centre Reactivation Strategy. Natural features, such as the South Para River and complex topography, as well as Gawler’s famous historic areas and buildings, needed to be considered.

A department store, additional supermarket, a TAFE and a multi level car park have been constructed. Infrastructure improvements plus a traffic management and car parking development strategy were also included. Each has been located in the town centre to support main street shopping and attract additional retail and office investment.

Building form and designs are all compatible with the Town Centre’s historic character. Gawler’s association with Colonel William Light, the original town planner, the consequent historical architectural, and town planning interest that has resulted from this association have also influenced the final plan.
