Wireless broadband enhances public safety and surveillance*

Technology has enhanced the capabilities of governments and public safety officials around the world to keep communities and citizens safe.

Advancements in radio communications delivered by digital technology such as interoperability, connectivity across a large geographic area and access to data applications have resolved some key issues faced by first responders.

Public safety officials, however, understand that voice communication has its limits and many are investigating technologies such as wireless broadband to supplement their voice networks.

These cutting edge, mobile high speed data networks complement voice systems and serve as a cost effective means to deliver applications, such as streaming video for surveillance and disaster response, fast downloads of suspect photos or building blueprints, and access to public safety databases.

“Wireless broadband is becoming an integral part of public safety infrastructure and, in response, Motorola will continue to develop mission critical wireless data network technology to further revolutionise the way emergency services protect communities,” said Jason Beaumont, Motorola Australia’s wireless broadband manager.

In Australia, local councils have already invested in and deployed Motorola wireless surveillance networks to monitor key commercial districts and crime hotspots.

Motorola’s key technologies in the area of wireless communications include the MotoMesh and Point to Point and Point to Multipoint networks.

The platforms’ scalability means coverage areas can be rapidly expanded with minimal infrastructure costs.

In Gladstone, Queensland Motorola has developed a solution that wirelessly connects network IP-capable CCTV cameras, to provide a secure, cost-effective, high quality monitoring and surveillance system for Gladstone City Council, based on MotoMesh Duo technology.

The new cameras will improve safety for Gladstone residents and provide peace of mind as they offer reliable 24/7 monitoring and surveillance. The cameras will play a key part in the evidentiary process that will let Council establish what crime or event occurred, who was responsible and what action is appropriate.

Motorola’s experience in deploying outdoor wireless networks, along with the breadth of its wireless broadband portfolio, means it can offer local councils and government an unparalleled range of solutions to meet their unique needs.
