24-hour service for regional gym

Swipe card readers and 24-hour CCTV cameras have opened up a regional Western Australian gym for after hours use.

With healthy lifestyle an important element to the quality of life for Town of Port Hedland residents, it was only a matter of time before the introduction of a 24-hour gym service at Wanangkura Stadium, a facility owned by the Town of Port Hedland and managed by the YMCA.

To ensure the security of gym patrons, users access the gym using a swipe card that has been specifically installed for after-hours use.

Additional security is in place with 24 hour CCTV coverage of the facility and numerous alarm sensors designed to monitor patrons use of the facilities.

Wanangkura Stadium currently has 1434 members, with 450 of those members using the after-hours gym services on a regular basis with a predicted increase over the next 12 months.

“The Town of Port Hedland is pleased to be able to introduce the 24 hour gym service, the first of its kind for Port Hedland,” Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said.

“The Town recognises the unique nature of the working population in Port Hedland with many workers employed in the resource industry working ‘sportsman’ shifts, meaning they’re either working or sleeping during the hours when you would normally run your errands and partake in exercise.

The stadium first opened its doors in July 2012 with regular hours, and from day one has seen an increasing number of members.

Following regular demand for a 24-hour gym, Wanangkura Stadium introduced the service in September 2013.

There are now very few periods of the day when the facility is not in use.

Mayor Howlett said that by utilising the technology available to provide such services, it broadened the opportunities for improving the Town’s delivery of services to the community.

“Having a 24 hour gym service allows our members to access the gym at a time that is suitable for them, thus improving their physical and mental health as well as their quality of life in Port Hedland.”
