New recycling facility on the Gold Coast*

Replas has officially opened its new recycling facility on the Gold Coast.

The 3000 square metre purpose-built facility is presently the only operation in Queensland able to process a full range of plastic packaging materials diverted from landfill.

Gold Coast Mayor, Cr Tom Tate has officially opened the new facility and praised the operation.

“Not only are we supportive of what they’re doing, but also I can assure you we are going to be a long-term customer.”

Mr. Mark Yates, Director of Research & Development at Replas addressed the challenges of opening
the facility.

“We needed to design, develop and build some new technology that would be able to handle the complicated mix of packaging
materials received.

“With this advanced technology we have reached a new stage of processing not only in Australia, but also on a global level.”

The Gold Coast centre will initially make the Brolga Bollard, a post designed specifically for the Queensland market and winner of the Civenex 2014 Best Environmental Product Award.

Production of the Brolga saved over 14,000 kg of waste plastic packaging from landfill in its first month and in full production is expected each month to consume 30,000 kg of soft plastics largely sourced through the Coles REDcycle program.

Replas anticipates that as support grows from local councils the range of products produced in the Queensland facility can be expanded helping to grow jobs and reduce landfill.

The Australian Packaging Covenant and Queensland Government through the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection support production of the Brolga Bollard.

Australian Packaging Covenant CEO, Mr Stan Moore said, “The Australian Packaging Covenant is pleased to partner with industry and government to find world class solutions such as this to increase the recycling and reuse of packaging materials”.
