Resolution to soil contamination brings wins*

The first commercially viable and environmentally sustainable resolution to soil contamination has opened in Cootamundra.

In the past, contaminated soil has been attended to via limited solutions – none of which resolve the contamination issue in its entirety.

Incineration, removal and dump, or cap and contain either produce contamination during their processes or leave the issue largely unresolved.

However, for the first time in Australia, a company called Waste Science has opened its first Soil Recycling Facility (SRF) in Cootamundra NSW.

This SRF solves the issue of highly toxic petro chemical soil contamination in what is not only the most sustainable, but also the most cost effective solution to land contamination: Bio-remediation.

Bioremediation is the use of living organisms, primarily microorganisms, to degrade the environmental contaminants into biomass and water.

The first year of the first SRF has been one of achievements for Waste Science itself and the local Cootamundra council and community.

A joint soil contamination venture was a contributing factor in the decision to grant the AR Bluett award to the Cootamundra Shire Council.

The SRF supports a host of local businesses, including farmers who now have a source for the supply of organic materials.

Furthermore the SRF has already successfully remediated thousands of tonnes of highly contaminated soil from the various gasworks and service station clean up projects, ready for beneficial reuse.

With a head office in Sydney, two more soil-recycling facilities on the horizon and R&D invested in the remediation of asbestos, Waste Science expects 2015 to also be a year of achievements.

Keep an eye out in LG Focus for following features – this is definitely a space to watch.
