The City of Casey is continuing to advocate to the State and Federal Governments for the provision of improved diverse and affordable housing to help close the gap between supply and demand.
At its meeting on 1 December 2015, Council resolved to advocate for improved housing outcomes in Casey through a submission to the Plan Melbourne Refresh, emphasising the need for more social and diverse housing and supporting inclusion rezoning on affordable and diverse housing.
When moving the motion, Mayfield Ward Councillor Amanda Stapledon said housing affordability was an issue in many outer areas including Casey.
“Many people in our community find it difficult to access suitable, affordable housing, either through disability or personal circumstances.
“Housing is generally regarded as unaffordable if a person or household is paying more than 30 percent of their income to secure housing, either through rent or a mortgage.
“In the rental housing market, private rental and social housing supply is not keeping pace with the current population growth.
“Social housing provides support to people on the lowest incomes, so closing the gap between social housing supply and demand is crucial.”
Mayor Councillor Sam Aziz added, “Council has the opportunity to advocate for the provision of improved housing outcomes, and will emphasise the need for social and diverse housing and the provision of inclusion rezoning in Casey in its submission to the refresh of Plan Melbourne.”
