Supporting active mums

Noosa Shire Council is hosting a program aimed at supporting post-natal mothers to stay active.

Almost 200 mums registered to take part in a wide range of free exercise opportunities offered under the program’s first round.

Preparations for the second round are underway and Development Officer Amanda Tie said Council expected similar interest this time.
“Council had hoped to have 50 mums involved in the first program, so to have 200 mums registering was an overwhelming indication of the demand and need of this type of initiative.

“Local mums flocked to Council’s website and booked out most activities within 48 hours.”

Any mother with a child not yet attending primary school is eligible to register with the program.

Council is currently preparing the program for round two and is keen to hear from local businesses interested in providing suitable activities for postnatal mums.

“Research shows women’s physical activity dramatically declines for a number of reasons after having children. This can have lasting impacts on their own health and well-being,” Ms Tie said.

“The program aims to increase the number of recent mums involved in post natal exercise and increase the number of programs in the community that specifically target mums.”

Council secured additional Get Out Get Active funding to deliver a second round of the Active Mums Noosa Program.

“The additional funding will enable a further 10 weeks of activities which we hope to commence in early June,” Ms Tie said.

The Queensland Government has provided $20,000 toward the program, with Noosa Council contributing $10,000.
