Fighting food insecurity

As part of the recent Anti-Poverty Week, residents of the City of Darwin donated almost 279kg of groceries to Foodbank NT.

The City of Darwin set up a food drive and put the call out to all City of Darwin staff and the public to get involved and donate much needed non-perishable food items to vulnerable and disadvantaged community members.

Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim said she was thrilled with the generosity of the people who contributed to the drive.

“Food insecurity is real for many households in Darwin and the donations contributed to Council’s food drive will go a long way,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Foodbank is one of the largest food relief organisations in the Northern Territory, and I am confident that these kind donations will be distributed to feed people in need.”

Foodbank NT Chief Executive Officer Peter Fisher said he was ecstatic with the donation of 278.7kg of groceries donated to Foodbank and thanked City of Darwin for their effort in organising the food drive.
“This initiative of Council staff in running a food drive as part of Anti-Poverty Week is most praiseworthy. Even more so the generosity of the community who contributed to the drive,” Mr Fisher said.

“Not only am I pleased about the quantity of donations we received through this great initiative, but I am more than impressed about the quality thinking that has gone into the foods which have been donated.

“We received adequate and nutritious foods which will help relieve hunger for thousands of people.

“Last year Foodbank NT donated the equivalent of 280,000 meals to the Darwin community and the 278.7kg of groceries through City of Darwin’s food drive will contribute significantly to the meals Foodbank NT provide this year.”
