Making a splash

The City of Stirling in Western Australia has plans to create an iconic beachfront destination, starting with a new outdoor pool.

Mayor Giovanni Italiano turned the first sod on 15 September and said the project will be the ‘jewel in the crown’ for the Scarborough Beach Redevelopment, which is occurring in partnership with the State Government and the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA).

The Mayor said the event was a “special milestone” for the City.
“Not only does it mark the beginning of official construction of our long-awaited 50-metre outdoor heated pool, but it also marks a day that many residents have waited for over sixteen years for a replacement for the old Scarborough Beach High School Pool.

“The beach pool will draw on Scarborough’s unique identity and create a vibrant hub of activity where people of all ages will be able to exercise, recreate and grab a bite to eat all whilst enjoying the amazing view of Scarborough Beach.

“The City and the MRA are working together to ensure Scarborough is an active family friendly hub for locals and tourists alike.”

The new pool will integrate an elevated restaurant on the mezzanine level with inside and outside dining accompanied by panoramic ocean views for visitors to enjoy and a ground level beach café catering to pool users, beach goers and the general public.

The pool will cater for learn-to-swim classes, senior and junior swim squads and other uses, such as water polo and pool inflatables. The pool will allow for water polo to run east to west and the separate leisure pool will be heated at 32 degrees to ensure a comfortable temperature for learn-to-swim all year round.

The $26 million facility will also feature spectator seating, change rooms and supporting amenities, extensive shade, relaxation areas and passive family spaces.

The 50-metre pool is expected to be complete by late 2017 with the official opening in early 2018.

Together the State Government and City of Stirling are investing $101 million to transform Scarborough into an iconic beachfront destination.
