Development with vision around transport hubs

The City of Bayswater has been working in partnership with the Western Australian State Government to look at the potential for transit oriented development (TOD) around the City’s train stations.

As part of the TOD approach, planning frameworks to guide the future development of the areas around Maylands and Ashfield have been prepared in consultation with local communities.

The TOD concept involves higher density living around town centres that have access to a wide range of housing choices, excellent local services such as shops and cafes, and the public transport options to connect communities.

City of Bayswater Mayor Terry Kenyon said that as an area intensifies using the TOD model, new business and investment opportunities open up.

“That encourages inward investment and job growth, and contributes to local prosperity,” he said.

“The planning frameworks that are in place for Ashfield and Maylands encourage developers to consider building a mix of homes, such as apartments and town houses, as well as mixed use developments incorporating retail and commercial premises.

“It provides more housing choice and attracts new businesses to an area.”

Transit Oriented Development entails creating walkable neighbourhoods featuring high quality urban design and streetscapes.

Emphasis is placed on improving local transport connections to reduce reliance on the car, giving the streets back to pedestrians and seeking to support vibrant and lively communities.
